Mushroom Foraging for Beginners: Safety First

Golden rule: never eat a wild mushroom unless you are 100% certain of identification. Start with easy species: chanterelles, hedgehogs, chicken of the woods - they have few dangerous lookalikes. Join a local mycological society.

Take a guided walk with an expert. Buy a regional field guide. Learn one species at a time.

When in doubt, throw it out. The most dangerous mushrooms (death cap, destroying angel) look nothing like what people expect poisonous mushrooms to look like..
