FAQ
How many mushroom species are there?
An estimated 14,000-22,000 described species of macrofungi (mushroom-forming fungi), with potentially 150,000+ species total including microscopic fungi. Only about 10% have been described.
Are all wild mushrooms dangerous?
No. Of the thousands of species, only about 100 are toxic and about 15-20 are deadly. Most are either edible or simply unpalatable. The key is accurate identification.
Can I eat mushrooms I find in the wild?
Only if you are 100% certain of identification. Join a local mycological society, go on guided walks, and learn one species at a time. The deadly species look surprisingly similar to edible ones.
What should I do if someone eats a poisonous mushroom?
Seek emergency medical care immediately. Bring a specimen or photo of the mushroom. Call poison control. Do not wait for symptoms - some deadly mushrooms have a 6-24 hour delay before symptoms appear.
