About the Matsutake

The most expensive mushroom in Asia - Japanese matsutake can sell for $1,000-2,000 per kg. Their spicy-aromatic odor is unique and intensely prized in Japanese cuisine. They cannot be cultivated, making wild harvest the only source. Japanese production has plummeted from 6,000 tons to 30 tons annually due to a pine nematode epidemic. They grow under specific pine trees in symbiosis.
