About the Split Gill
Schizophyllum commune, likely the most widespread mushroom on Earth, recorded on every continent. Its gills split lengthwise and close up in dry weather, letting it dry out and revive for years. Eaten in parts of Southeast Asia after careful cooking. It has more than 23,000 mating types, a biological record. In rare cases it infects human sinuses.
