About the Old Man of the Woods
Strobilomyces strobilaceus looks like a pinecone fragment wearing woolly gray scales. Flesh flushes reddish, then blackens when cut. A genuine bolete with tubes rather than gills. Edible when young despite the strange costume. Old specimens turn bitter and tough.
